Castleford Tigers vs Wakefield Trinity | Match Preview

Wakefield Trinity Ladies RL look to build on their pre-season progression as we head to The Mend-A-Hose Jungle to face Castleford Tigers in the Challenge Cup on Sunday.

Ourselves

After a rampant display against Hull KR last Sunday, Trinity fell to a closely-fought 20-16 defeat at the hands of Salford, ending pre-season with a victory and a defeat, respectively.

A much-changed side in both games offered coaches Liam Harnell and Ash Bond much food for thought in the offseason, completing the first two friendlies with 14 debutants across the two weeks.

Pre-season is over, though, and after a long time coming, the side will head to near-neighbours Castleford on Sunday hoping to gain that first vital win and bragging rights for the start of 2022.

Castleford Tigers

Much to the same tune as Trinity, Castleford have had a big overhaul in the offseason, themselves.

With many players moving on at the end of 2021, the club has come back in 2022 with a much-changed squad, with Kaitlin Varley taking the captain’s armband for the new year.

With the Women’s Super League on the horizon for both sides, Castleford will hope to get their season off to the best possible start on Sunday.

The Boss:

Wakefield Trinity Ladies’ head coach, Liam Harnell, said that he “can’t wait” for Sunday’s derby match-up with Castleford.

“We can’t wait. This is the game we have been building to since the first day of pre-season back in November. We have a lot of work to do this week and no doubt the girls will want to work put right where we lacked last week.

“[A victory will be] really important for confidence. Over the past two weeks, we have had a convincing victory against Hull KR and even with the loss against a strong Salford team. We know where we fell short and it’s up to us to put it right this weekend.”

Liam Harnell and Ash Bond have named their 19-player squad for Sunday’s Challenge Cup trip to The Mend-A-Hose Jungle.
