Trinity take victory over Toulouse

Wakefield Trinity take their first two points of the Super League season with an 18-6 victory over Toulouse.

First-half tries from Liam Hood and Guy Armitage got the game going before Brad Walker added two more points before the interval.

Kelepi Tanginoa got the game restarted with a powerful score just minutes after the break before Corey Hall added his second of the season in the final 10 minutes.

Trinity started the contest bolstered by the return of Hood and Reece Lyne after injury and a three-match ban, respectively.

New signing Morgan Escare also received his first start after signing for the club on a two-week loan from Salford earlier in the week.

It was the home side who started the brighter, David Fifita making huge metres in centre-field before the ball was finally played to Hall, but the Trinity centre was unable to find the whitewash.

The breakthrough was finally broken, however, as Hood dotted down to a big roar from the Wakefield faithful. After a strong stint on the Toulouse line, Hood darted from dummy-half to stretch over.

Trinity’s lead was short-lived, though, as the French side hit back almost instantly. Despite strong defence, Armitage crossed the whitewash to put Toulouse within two.

The away side soon levelled the scores, as a penalty in centre-field was capitalised on, with the scores at six apiece.

Determined to be ahead at the interval, a strong break from Tom Johnstone got Wakefield on the front foot. His pass then found Eddie Battye with the referee eventually calling a penalty in the home side’s favour. Brad Walker made no mistake with the extras, giving Trinity a two-point lead at half-time.

With Willie Poching’s words still ringing in their ears, Trinity wasted no time in adding to their advantage after the restart.

A neat passage of play finally found Tanginoa, who made no mistake close to the Toulouse whitewash.

For the moments that followed, it was all Wakefield. Escare thought he added an extra, but the referee had called the ball dead before Johnstone was dragged into touch at the opposite side of the field.

Resilience was the order of the day for the away side as Trinity continued to knock on the Toulouse door. Wakefield’s persistence would soon pay, though, as Hall added an extra in the final 10 minutes following excellent play from Johnstone.

With the score all but confirmed, Trinity held their own in the final minutes to seal a first win of 2022.
