Trinity claimed a fantastic 18-8 win on Sunday, against last year’s Challenge Cup winners, Warrington Wolves.
Two tries in the last ten minutes saw Trinity overcome a tough Warrington opposition in adverse Storm Dennis conditions, and take their first win of the 2020 Betfred Super League season.
Josh Wood also impressed on his home debut, and Bill Tupou returned to the side, with collective efforts from the Trinity outfit in what was a muddy battle at Belle Vue.
The game looked destined to be try-less in the beginning, with just a singular penalty courtesy of Stefan Ratchford, taking the half-time score to just 0-2.
With the second half underway, it wasn’t long before Trinity levelled the scores, with Ryan Hampshire kicking a penalty goal.
He then converted a further two in the space of fifteen minutes, pushing the home side into the lead, 6-2.
Both teams were desperate for the first try, but it would be the Wolves who would be the ones to make it over the line on the hour mark.
Back to back penalties then allowed Warrington capitalise with field position. It was a pass from debutant Gareth Widdop to Ben Currie that allowed him to then find Stefan Ratchford in support, who crossed for the first try on the game.
With ten minutes until the hooter, Trinity sprang to life and hit back, as Matty Ashurst crashed over from close range.
Just two minutes later, Warrington’s attack began to look dangerous, but Tom Johnstone was there to scoop up a loose ball, sprinting 50m down the touch line for a trademark try – clinching the win for Trinity.
It was a much-needed win for Trinity to get themselves off the mark, and they will now focus on their next fixture next Friday, away at Castleford Tigers, K.O. 7:45pm.
Wakefield will be hoping to build on Sunday’s great performance, as they look and will be determined to finally earn bragging rights in 2020.
