September 22, 2021

Wakefield Trinity are delighted to announce that Willie Poching has been appointed as Head Coach of Wakefield Trinity.

Poching takes over the reins as Head Coach after a successful spell on an interim basis since August. During that time, Poching has overseen five wins from seven in an enjoyable spell for all at the Club.

The 48-year-old had a decorated playing career in the Super League, which started at Trinity back in 1999 until 2001 and was a fan favourite amongst the Red, White & Blue army during that time.

Willie returned to Trinity as assistant coach ahead of the 2021 season, after spells with other Super League clubs during a fourteen-year period as an assistant.

Speaking about becoming Head Coach of Trinity, Poching said: “I’m extremely proud to sit in this seat and be the head coach of this team.

“It’s the Club of the city that I’ve lived in and have done for a long time, with such an illustrious history, a fantastic board and support crew.

“There has been a lot of success at this Club, but not for a little while and to be able to lead that now and try to chase that, is a challenge that I’m ready for. I’m extremely pleased and deeply honoured.”

Wakefield Trinity CEO Michael Carter is delighted to appoint Poching as Head Coach and added: “It’s with great delight that, after a very thorough process over the last seven weeks, the Club can announce the new head coach is Willie Poching.

“Willie has shown to myself and the board how thorough he can be as a head coach, how he can get his message across to the playing group, and I think that has shown in our performances over the last seven weeks.

“Since Willie got the role on an interim basis, he has responded to that in a magnificent manner. He has done a long apprenticeship as an assistant coach and is a very thorough man with how he goes about his business. It was a culmination of factors when appointing the head coach and for the board, it was a unanimous decision to appoint Willie.”
