Trinity to Take Over City Centre

Wakefield Trinity will join Wakefield BID to take over the city centre this April for the first time ever.

WFD Scrumday will see a host of free events with the club’s first team squad alongside a panel of legends, academy starlets and club officials.

Aimed at fans and families, the free event is being run by Wakefield BID (business improvement district) in partnership with Wakefield Trinity to encourage more people to visit the city and celebrate its professional sports team.

The event, on Sunday April 7, will see activities taking place in the city centre near Wakefield Cathedral, The Ridings Shopping Centre and Trinity Walk, meaning visitors can experience different activities and meet different players in various locations between 11am and 3pm.

There will be 500 junior match day tickets given out on the day as well as competition prizes to win too.

Full location details are still being planned, but activity is set to include:

  • Meet and greet with the first team stars for pictures and autographs
  • Public vs player fun challenges
  • Giant goalposts kick challenge
  • Inflatable games
  • Fun coaching session with Trinity head coach Chris Chester
  • Q&A with Trinity legends
  • Rugby-related games and activities
  • Cheerleading performances and interactive fun cheer classes
  • Entertainment and picture opportunities with club mascot Daddy Cool
  • Pop-up shops
  • Bands and entertainment moving between each location
  • Giant group photo at around 3.15pm with players and visitors by Wakefield Cathedral (subject to approval)

Elizabeth Murphy, Wakefield BID manager, said, “This is another exciting first for the city centre and we can’t wait. It makes sense to join forces with our city’s leading professional sports team to celebrate what they’re doing for Wakefield and give people a reason to visit and experience our city centre.

“It’s the cheapest day to park, at just 50p at The Ridings and Trinity Walk for example, so we want people to come on down with the family and friends, explore, have fun and make a day of it – whether that’s also having lunch or dinner or enjoying a few drinks in our quality bars later on.

“It’s the first one, so there is a lot for us all to learn, but we hope that it will be a great success and something we can look at becoming an annual celebration.”

Verity Thomas, Commercial Manager of Wakefield Trinity RLFC, said, “We are thrilled to have been given the opportunity by Wakefield BID to take over the city for the day and we thought it was such a great idea.

“Whether you are a Wakefield Trinity fan or not, there will be activities going on throughout the day that everyone can enjoy. We look forward to seeing you all there on Sunday 7th April for what is set to be a brilliant family day out.”
