Trinity Ladies suffer Challenge Cup defeat

Wakefield Trinity Ladies RL fall to a 32-0 defeat as Featherstone Rovers take the spoils at the Be Well Support Stadium.

After a two-week break and still reeling from their victory over Castleford in round one, Wakefield headed into the contest full of confidence.

Bolstered by the returns of Millen Downs, and most notably, Becky Grady, Trinity looked to get off to the best possible start. However, it was not meant to be as the away side struck first in the contest.

Brogan Churm powered her way through the Trinity defence to touch down with just minutes on the clock.

Despite their early setback, Trinity responded well, Jade Key pulling the strings, bringing Cassy Lawson and Lauren Harvey into the contest.

Two chances in two minutes followed as looked for a route back into the game before the interval. Key unlocking the Featherstone defence as she was tackled just inches from the line before Amy Bennett was pulled into touch on the left-hand side.

Unable to capitalise on our pressure, it was the home side who doubled their advantage just before the break as Aime Backhouse touched down the visitors’ second of the game underneath the sticks.

With the coach’s instructions still ringing in their ears, Trinity started the second half well. However, it was the away side who added to their advantage as Chloe Nash went over on the left edge.

A big break in centre-field from Lauren Harvey and then Lisa Taylor followed, however, strong defence from the away side kept Wakefield at bay.

Unable to cross that Featherstone whitewash caused problems for the home side as Rovers added another through Hailey Swann.

There was time for more tries, alas, it wasn’t to be for the home side. Katie Hepworth and a Churm second completed the afternoon’s scoring as Trinity suffer Challenge Cup defeat for the first time in 2022.
