Wakefield Trinity bow out of the Betfred Challenge Cup as Wigan take a 36-6 victory at the Be Well Support Stadium.
Lewis Murphy’s first-half try just wasn’t good enough on the day as the visitors ran over six tries, including a Jai Field hat-trick, to get the Warriors into the semi-final hat.
After a battling win over Salford last time out, Trinity had a few key players missing as Wigan visited the Be Well Support Stadium in the Challenge Cup.
It was the home side who started the brighter, though, Murphy thought he had opened the game’s scoring just after the 10-minute mark, but the video referee deemed the ball was not grounded.
Minutes after they thought they had opened the scoring, Trinity found themselves on the wrong end of the points. Liam Farrell broke the Wakefield line and Field was on hand to touch down his first of the game.
Despite that setback, Trinity rallied, snatching one back through Murphy as the Wakefield winger was on tenterhooks once again. After the earlier video referee decision didn’t go his way, Murphy found out that he had indeed drawn the scores level.
With just five minutes of the first half remaining, Trinity was holding their own, causing the Warriors problems as they approached the opposition line.
However, it was the away side who took the advantage into the break. Thomas Leuluai offloaded the ball to Ethan Havard as the forward went over, despite a resilient Trinity defence.
Unfortunately for Trinity, the second half started in much the same way the first finished, Wigan caused havoc in the Trinity defence as Field grabbed his second before Zak Hardaker went over in the corner.
Things went from bad to worse for the hosts as the game wore on, Farrell getting on the score sheet with just 10 minutes remaining before Field grabbed his hat-trick in the dying embers.
Wakefield Trinity will be back in action on Thursday night as we entertain rivals Castleford in the Betfred Super League.
