Trinity came out on top on Sunday afternoon, as they claimed an 18-6 victory against Hull Kingston Rovers in Danny Brough’s testimonial match. (Match Report by Emma Holley).
It was a scrappy game in mud-ridden conditions at the Mobile Rocket Stadium, but both teams showed promising signs heading into the Betfred Super League competition, where the two sides will face each other in Round 1 in just a few weeks time.
Ryan Hampshire was the one to open the scores on the 25th minute. A build-up of set play and passes allowed Rocky to take a scampering solo run towards the line and claim the first try. Brough then added the extras.
Trinity showcased some expansive play, first a fantastic break from Bill Tupou on his return to instil life into the Trinity outfit, before a fantastic 40/20 from the main man, Brough himself.
But Trinity did not have it easy, as a lively Hull Kingston Rovers side made Trinity work hard for their tries.
Yet just three minutes into the second half, Tom Johnstone bagged himself a trademark try on his return to action. Rocky come up with the goods as his long overhead pass put the winger in space out wide.
A powering run from Kelepi Tanginoa then gave Trinity the field position to further capitalise, and twenty minutes from time, Kyle Wood claimed the final try. Brough slid a grubber kick through, and Wood was there to pounce and touch down beneath the sticks; in front of the Trinity faithful.
Brough was on fire with boot, converting three out three goals.
The Rovers hit back immediately through Ethan Ryan however, who crossed out wide, to ensure that his side got themselves on the scoreboard.
It was an encouraging display from both teams, as the beginning of the Betfred Super League nears.
Trinity will now face Huddersfield Giants on Wednesday 22nd January in their final friendly encounter, before Round 1 commences on 31st January, when Trinity travel to Craven Park.
