Millward maturing at Trinity

Wakefield Trinity Ladies RL’s Abbie Millward insisted Sunday’s defeat to Featherstone was a learning curve as we prepare to go to battle on Sunday.

A victory and a defeat so far in the Challenge Cup means that this weekend’s clash with Oulton Raidettes leaves us in a must-win scenario if we want to progress into the quarter-final stages.

Qualification could have been secured on Sunday, however, Trinity’s return to the Be Well Support Stadium ended in defeat, as Featherstone took a 32-0 victory, something the side will learn a lot from.

“As a team, we definitely learnt that we were stronger and more together in the match,” Millward explained.

“In the first half, we were quick off the line, which seemed to pressure them into making errors.

“Throughout the game and past games, I feel every player has my back just like I have theirs.”

After being around the squad for a couple of years now, Millward is one of the players who has been promoted to the open age and has bought into what the club can offer.

Taking the starting number nine shirt for 2022, she has adapted, like all the girls, to the new group dynamic well, forming key partnerships around the park.

Still, at the young age of 16, Millward has matured as a Trinity player and is looking forward to the rest of the season.

“The girls are so encouraging and welcoming to me when I came. They all have given me support and more confidence within my game, all of us are very bonded together and this shows when we play because we play as a team.

“This has helped our performance on match days. The Ladies’ team is a big step, but I am so excited to begin a new challenge in my rugby and develop as a player with amazing teammates alongside me.

“This team will help mature my Rugby; this is something that I am thrilled to be able to do with Wakefield Trinity.”

Touching down two tries already this season, Millward has found a knack for finding the whitewash.

With creative players in the halves, she is excited to see how many she can add before the end of the season.

“The team allows me to express my game and get over the whitewash.

“This is done as a team effort because every player who has carried into contact, offloaded the ball or been a part of a play has all helped us get to the outcome of a try.

“This is so important as these things allow us to win games and to score tries.”

Trinity will face Oulton Raidettes on Saturday as we look to book our place in the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup.

The game will also be streamed live on the Our League app or you can follow the game on our numerous social media platforms.
