Chairman Statement – Abandoned Match

Firstly, can I thank all those that worked their socks off trying to get this match on. At 5 o clock there was no snow on the pitch or the surrounding areas, and even at 6pm conditions were deemed safe by the Match Commissioner and the Ground Safety Officer.

I would also like to commend Liam Moore, the match official, for attempting to play the game. Unfortunately Mother Nature beat us despite all our efforts, and Liam made exactly the right call to abandon the game.

Where a match is abandoned, the RFL Board determines whether the result shall stand or whether the match will be re-played.  Given the time of the abandonment, we fully envisage that the match will be re-scheduled.

Operational rules B1.28 (b) states that ‘upon the abandonment of a Match for any reason before or during the half time interval which is subsequently declared to be void, spectators who attended the abandoned Match shall be entitled to admission for the next playing of the Match at half price’.

However as a gesture of goodwill towards both Wakefield and Widnes fans, the Club will give everyone who attended the game and has retained their ticket stub, a free ticket for the rearranged fixture. Details of how to redeem this will be announced in due course.

Lastly can I thank all that attended tonight, and wish you all a safe journey home.
