A new season beckons for PDRL

Wakefield Trinity PDRL start their 2023 journey on Sunday as we head to Robin’s Park in Wigan to take part in the first festival of the year.

A rollercoaster of emotions at the back end of last year saw Trinity pick up their first bit of silverware in the PDRL competition. Following a fantastic campaign led by the experience of head coach, Lee Whiteley, the side took the league by storm, cementing their place at the top of the tree with multiple festivals still to play.

The League Leaders’ Shield was in the trophy cabinet, with the Grand Final up next. A fantastic performance in the opening game of the RFL’s Finals Day saw the side book a highly-anticipated match with Lee Rhinos in the final, a grandstand game to end a magical season.

After a lovely passage of play on the left, Callum Parkinson’s outstanding break was finished off my winger, Ben Reynolds, whose Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired celebration gave Trinity the opening score.

However, it just wasn’t meant to be for the side as a last-gasp winner from the Rhinos saw our West Yorkshire counterparts claim the PDRL crown.

For the majority, that was the end, the last chapter was written, however, for seven of our star players, it was onto the next, the international stage. Hard work, determination and a great amount of skill saw Trinity represent at the PDRL World Cup, with five turning out for England.

Big score lines, tricky tactics and some wonderful tries captivated a worldwide audience as the Trinity players introduced themselves onto the world stage, claiming World Cup glory for the very first time.

The 2022 chapter has now been written and is time to turn the page, starting tomorrow as we come face-to-face with both Warrington and Leeds in the opening rounds of the new season. The first game of the new year is scheduled to take place at 12:30pm against the Wolves, followed closely by the Grand Final rematch at 1:30pm, with both fixtures taking place on the grass at Wigan’s facility.

Boasting a very similar side as last year, with a few small tweaks, Trinity will be looking to go one step further on the 30th September and get their hands on that all-elusive crown.
