Trinity Step Closer to Top Four Finish

After a shaky start, Trinity continued their fight for a top four finish after securing a victory over Widnes Vikings at the Halton Stadium in the penultimate game of the Super League.

Trinity fought back after a disappointing start to the game to go into half time in the lead by 10 points.

Despite a strong kick off for Wakefield, the home side were the first to go into the lead after a couple of errors in defence by Trinity; Mellor then evaded a few tackles to cross the line for Widnes and Marsh added the extras.

Trinity looked close to getting back into the game after being awarded a penalty on Widnes’ 20m mark. On the next play the ball went out to Ashurst who dived over but the play was brought back after Williams forward pass.

On 13 minutes Mason Caton-Brown finally got the try for Trinity down the left side after Bill Tupou made the initial break. Unfortunately Finn was unable to add the extras and Trinity still trailed by 6-4.

Trinity were awarded with another penalty left of the sticks on Widnes’ 10m line which Finn kicked and added the extras to put the scores level.

Ryan Ince was sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes after he tackled Mason Caton-Brown off the ball.

However it was Widnes who went back into the lead after Marsh nudged the home side ahead by two points, after Trinity were pulled up on the final tackle.

Trinity then pushed forward in attack, Bill Tupou went over from 10m out after a repeat set for Wakefield, Finny and Wood combined well to find the centre.

A lovely dummy from Sam Williams deep inside Widnes’ half put Trinity even further into the lead after a great defensive display forcing Widnes out into touch moments earlier to gain possession.

On 62 minutes, Tinirau Arona got his first try of the season for Trinity after he went over in the corner; William’s kick was caught by Arundel who found Arona. Finn added the extras to make it 24-8.

Two late tries for Trinity sealed the win, the first when Mason Caton-Brown who strolled in on the left side to further Trinity’s lead. Then a fantastic set from Trinity after the restart; Caton-Brown made a break down the left, he had Tupou in support who went over to finish the game on 36-8.
