Wakefield Trinity’s newest signing, Sid Adebiyi, has hailed the club’s signing of the Muslim Athlete Charter as “outstanding.”

Following in the footsteps of numerous sporting organisations, Trinity become the first Super League club to sign Nujum Sports’ Muslim Athlete Charter, following in the footsteps of Championship side, London Broncos.

The pledge is a continued commitment to recognising Muslim athletes’ needs, allowing an increase in diversity across the sporting world, something Adebiyi is extremely proud to be a part of.

“I think it is a big step, not just for Rugby League, but for sport in general,” the forward explained.

“The past couple of years have been tough for Muslim athletes, especially with the food, Ramadan and having to pray five times a day.

“To get recognition for that amongst both players, staff and supporters is a huge step forward.”

With more high-profile clubs standing by Muslim athletes and offering them ways to practice their religion whilst playing the game they love is extremely important, and Adebiyi is happy to finally see some change.

“There used to be tough times, especially during Ramadan when we had to fast during the peak of a season, which was quite tough,” he said.

“Having to train without food or liquid to rehydrate was difficult, but, for me, at that age, I was following my religion to the tee, and although it was tough, I wasn’t shying away from it.

“A lot of players and staff used to understand, but with clubs signing this athlete charter, hopefully, it can shine a light on its importance.”

Signing ahead of the 2022 season, Adebiyi – who was born in Nigeria – started his career down south, spending six years at London Broncos before making the move to West Yorkshire in the off-season.

The forward, whose dad is a Muslim, is delighted to be associating himself with a club that is keen on making Rugby League a sport for all.

“I think it is outstanding!

“Obviously, this is my first time coming to Wakefield and signing a charter of this nature makes everyone inclusive, diverse and offers people the chance, from all different backgrounds, to play the sport.

“Overall, I think it is unbelievable and something positive that the club is doing.”
