For the first time ever, Wakefield Trinity will host a Wheelchair RL game as we look to bolster our already successful Disability Rugby League set-up at the club.
After months of tireless work, the club are now in a position to host a friendly match as Sheffield Eagles head to Wakefield in a history-making moment for the club. Starting back in 2021, the road has been long for our Wheelchair RL programme, starting from scratch, using the funds from the RLWC2021’s Created By funds.
With a steady increase in participants, the game exploded late last year as England took the whole world by storm, winning the first-ever Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup, injecting a passion for the game in the process. With over 10 players and weekly training sessions, we look to take the programme to the next level, hosting development fixtures across the new season.
The game, a hard-hitting version of mainstream Rugby League, follows similar rules to that of its maker, utilising skill, speed and stamina to move forward up the field.
For the majority, this will be their first time playing in a competitive Wheelchair setting, with many having not played the game in the past, being shown the ropes by experienced head coach, Gavin Dobson. This is a terrific feat as we look to rapidly expand the game across the club & Wakefield community.
The match-up will take place from 2pm at St Thomas A Becket Secondary, just off Barnsley Road in Wakefield, with spectators encouraged to leave a donation towards the Foundation’s continued work in this sector.
Speaking on the launch of the game, Rugby League & Inclusion Officer, Charlie Doherty, said, “Over the last couple of months, ever since the World Cup last year, we have seen a steady increase in participants, which is really pleasing to see.
“The sport is now a staple programme across our inclusion set-up, and you can see how much our players are enjoying it. I look forward to seeing our side in action and competing against a solid side.”
