Wakefield Trinity Ladies will be making the step up into the Women’s Super League next season.
Trinity were the first-ever Super League club to adopt a women’s team back in 2016 – entering the Women’s Championship the following year.
And from not winning a game in their first five months, they went on to be crowned league leaders last season, having made the decision not to make the jump to the top league just yet.
Head coach Wayne Hirst was appointed at the start of the 2018 season and steered the ladies to their first piece of silverware in the women’s championship – also winning Coach of the Year for his efforts.
He said, “We are really looking forward to making the big step up to Super League next season. The girls really deserve the opportunity now.
“When I came in, it was the right decision to stay in the Championship for another year and really make sure the ladies were ready for Super League.
“Now I know they are ready after winning the Championship last season.
“It’ll be tough but we’ve just got to work hard each week and that hard work will pay off, and we can compete with the top teams.”
Hirst continued, “We have a great mix of youth and experience in our current squad and the recruitment process for next year is already underway. I think we will raise a few eyebrows.”
With three players representing Yorkshire in this year’s Origin fixture, Lisa Taylor, Danni Swaine and Jess Mathews, Trinity have enough talent to be mixing with the Super League teams.
There’ll be some mouth-watering derbies against the likes of Castleford Tigers and Leeds Rhinos – and next year promises to be a historic one for Wakefield.
This year has already seen Trinity launch their women and girls’ growth programme Girl Code 13, with five new girls’ teams being established by the end of the year – including Wakefield Trinity Girls U16s.
Trinity’s community manager James Stephenson, who helped to introduce the ladies team and has gone onto become heavily involved with women & girls rugby league, said, “Women and girls rugby league is thriving in and around Wakefield. We have committed to ensure that Wakefield Trinity are proactive and leading in what we do for female rugby league.
“These are very exciting times and I would like to thank all the team, Wayne and his coaching staff along with all the backroom personnel who all have made this possible. I can’t wait to be in Super League next year to make it even better.”
Wakefield Trinity Ladies will be holding an open trial on Saturday 8th December 11:30am at our player development centre; Kettlethorpe State-of-the-art 3G sports pitch.
As we look forward to the Women’s Superleague in 2019 we would you would like invite any female over 16 to come along.
