Romano pleased to open her Trinity account

Wakefield Trinity Ladies’ Nataliina Romano was delighted to cross for her first try of 2022 as we saw off Castleford Tigers Women with an 8-4 derby day victory.

Signing from Hull FC in the off-season, Romano has made an enormous impact on the Trinity side since her visit to the Be Well Support Stadium, making the trip across the M62 with both Cassy and Leonie Lawson.

Having played a role in the majority of the games this season, Romano saw the Tigers for the taking on Sunday, latching onto Abbie Millward’s neat offload to power her way over the whitewash to open the game’s scoring.

“It feels great [to get her first victory in Trinity colours], and definitely feels like it’s been a long time coming for the girls. I’m so very proud to be a part of that in my new journey with them all.

“It’s always good to get across the whitewash, especially in my first season with the girls and hopefully it’s just one of many.

“It was a great team effort to get up the field and I’m thankful I finished it off and opened the score for them.”

Following Romano’s decisive try late on in the first half, Trinity was cruising into the interval with a four-score lead. However, Cassy had different plans. Millward again provided the assist, and following a high tackle, the referee ordered a tap-and-go on the Castleford 10-metre line, providing Lawson with ample opportunity to pick her gap and touch down, stating a two-score lead over the visitors.

Eager to hold onto the advantage, Trinity came out swinging in the second half, Amy Bennett just shy of the line before Lawson, once again, had the ball down in the Tigers’ in-goal, only for the referee to call a penalty in the away side’s favour.

Castleford did get one back in the 75th minute as Kaitlin Varley pounced on a loose ball, but it wasn’t enough as Wakefield took their first BWSL victory of the season.

“I’m thoroughly enjoying it [my time at Wakefield].

“It’s been life-changing for myself joining Wakefield and I’m only just starting to get my feet on the ground, but, overall the team is full of great girls and crazy personalities. The staff behind the scenes couldn’t do enough for you.

“I’m happy and content with my new rugby family.”

The victory on Sunday completed a derby day double over our near neighbours, beating the Tigers for the second time in 2022.

This has now provided a platform to build, and with their tails up and confidence running through their veins, the side are looking to go back-to-back as Barrow head to the Be Well Support Stadium on 17th July.

“[Victory over Castleford has] provided a buzz around the squad and it’s just what we needed.

“We can push and build moving forward from that game and, hopefully, walk away with more wins.

“The determination the team has is great, so I can only say there are more good things to come for us Women down at Wakefield Trinity.”
