Match Preview | Leigh Miners vs Trinity Ladies

The formalities are finished, and we are back as we kick off our Women’s Super League campaign against Leigh Miners Ladies on Sunday.

Ourselves:

After a long pre-season, that started at the back end of 2021, Wakefield Trinity Ladies kick start their Group 2 Super League campaign against Leigh Miners on Sunday.

A disappointing end to the Challenge Cup with defeat against Oulton in the final group game offered the new-look side plenty of pointers, fixing combinations and getting used to new players in the squad.

That has all led up to this as we look to build foundations in the early part of the season and take some positive form into the remainder of the campaign.

The Opposition: Leigh Miners

Leigh Miners Ranger Ladies won last year’s Championship, with the success leading to the club being offered a place in the 2022 Women’s Super League.

The club has been very supportive of the Ladies’ team as they become the first community club to be offered a place in Super League.

With a strong defensive pack and plenty of confidence amongst the ranks, Leigh will pose a difficult test for Trinity on Sunday.

The Coach:

Trinity Ladies’ coach, Charlie Doherty, spoke earlier in the week as he previews this weekend’s game

“I know that the squad is raring to go and can’t wait for it to start, so we will be expecting the same things we want every time we step onto the field.

“100% percent effort from the first whistle to the last; tough carries; be strong in contact; support each other whether things go right or wrong; stick to the game plan we’ve discussed & covered in training, and hopefully come away successful.

“I have managed to catch a few of their [Leigh Miners Ladies] games and know that they are coming into the Super League as Champions with the best defensive record in last season’s Championship.

“We know that Leigh Miners are not going to be an easy task and we expect them to come at us hard with the strong ball carriers and quick ruck defence they have.”
