A former Ireland captain, he previously played at club level for Halifax, Doncaster, Huddersfield, Limoux, Warrington, Leigh, Widnes and Wakefield Trinity. He is the older brother of Simon Grix.

Tom Johnstone (born 13 August 1995) is an English professional rugby league footballer for Wakefield Trinity in the Super League and is the current holder of the First Utility Super League Young Player Of The Year 2016.

With his father in the Army, Johnstone was born in Germany, but has lived in England since he was very young. As a junior he played for Stanningley rugby club. Johnstone attended Pudsey Grangefield School and represented Leeds sprinting team at Indoor athletics.
