Wakefield Trinity Ladies RL began 2022 with a comprehensive 32-4 victory over Championship side Hull KR in their first pre-season outing.
With a total of 31 players heading into the new season, coaches Liam Harnell and Ash Bond had plenty of the squad to choose from as we headed to Upton this afternoon.
After being promoted in 2021, the Robins’ tails were up, however, it was Wakefield who registered the first try of the afternoon.
Prop forward and vice-captain, Cassy Lawson, used her strength to power through the Hull KR defence and over the whitewash in the 12th minute.
Following in her sister’s footsteps, it was the other Lawson sister who registered her first try in Trinity colours, Leonie taking the ball in and touching down.
With an 8-0 lead to hold onto after the first quarter, Trinity wasted no time in adding to the scoreline. This time, new signing, Millen Downs, fended off a barrage of Hull KR defenders to power her way to the in-goal.
There was still time for one more score before the interval, though, Abbie Millward using her strength from dummy-half to add another shortly after the half-hour mark.
With a comprehensive advantage at the break, Harnell and Bond made some changes, utilising the squad well in the second period.
However, just four minutes after the restart, it was the away side who pulled one back after a great move down the right.
Unfazed by KR’s earlier score, the home side regathered, adding two more tries in quick succession.
Leonie Lawson touched down her second of the afternoon before Jade Key scored her first try in red, white and blue.
Brooke Price topped over a great performance in the dying embers as Trinity heads to Salford next Sunday full of confidence.
