Trinity youngster backs WSL Academy

14th January 2022

Academy graduate, Abigail Birthwhistle, insists the club’s newly-launched Women’s Super League Academy will “massively improve skill and ability” throughout the younger generation.

Birthwhistle, who will be on dual-reg with her community club Oulton, is a big admirer of the new system, being part of the new and improved set-up.

After learning her love for Rugby in a school P.E lesson, Abigail started her club journey at the Raidettes, playing for their under-12, 14 and 16 sides.

From there, it was into the big leagues, being snapped up by Wakefield following a successful trial with the club in 2021.

“I think it will help us younger players’ skill and ability, as we will have access to a higher level of coaching and better facilities,” she said, speaking upon the launch of the club’s WSL academy set-up.

“We will also be able to gain new attributes from existing Women’s Super League players.”

Offered the luxury of both experience and youth, the club has built a very well-rounded side for the 2022 season.

Birthwhistle is glad of background, however, and she believes that teaching the inner workings of the game from a young age can only benefit the future generation.

“I am extremely pleased that the club has taken the option to introduce a Women’s Super League academy,” she explained.

“It will create a clear pathway through and also gives a good insight to know what is required and needed to play in the WSL.”

Now, working with experienced players such as Dani Swaine and Lisa Taylor, Birthwhistle is excited about the growth of the women’s game.

“If youth players can now participate in a local/regional league, it will promote the club from junior to Super League level.

“This will also create a clear route, from starting the academy to eventually being picked for open age.

“By introducing Rugby League to younger players, coaches can develop skills which will allow them to thrive in the future.”
